Madurai holds countless fascinating stories and secrets waiting to be discovered. From ancient legends to modern marvels, this destination continues to captivate visitors with its rich heritage.
The Mythical Origins of Madurai
According to legend, the city's original name was Kadambavanam, a dense forest of Kadamba trees. Lord Shiva appeared in a dream to King Kulashekara Pandya and instructed him to build a temple. When the king cleared the forest, Shiva manifested as a 'lingam' (a symbol of Shiva) under a Kadamba tree. To mark the boundary of the city, Shiva drew a serpent around the area. From the serpent (Naga in Tamil) and drawing of the boundary (Medu in Tamil), the city derived its name, Madurai. The legend highlights the divine connection attributed to the city's founding and the enduring reverence for Lord Shiva.
The Significance of Jasmine in Madurai
Madurai is renowned for its jasmine flowers, known as 'Madurai Malli'. The unique fragrance and quality of Madurai jasmine are attributed to the region's climate and soil. The flower is an integral part of the city's culture and economy. Every day, tons of jasmine are traded in the flower markets, used for temple offerings, garlands, and hair adornments. The jasmine trade provides livelihood to thousands of families in and around Madurai. The distinct aroma and cultural significance of Madurai Malli have earned it a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, protecting its unique identity.
